A subwoofer and an amplifier are not two purchases. They are one system, and they get installed as one job.
That is why this is one page instead of two. The sub moves the air. The amp gives it the power to do it. Buy one without the other and you have half a system that will disappoint you the first time you turn it up.
What actually separates a bass system that lasts from one that cuts out on the freeway has almost nothing to do with which brand is on the box. It is the wiring behind it.
Somebody will always install an amplifier cheaper than we will. Here is what that usually looks like when it comes back to us.
The power wire run through the door jamb where the door closes on it every time you get out. Grounded wherever was closest, or not grounded properly at all. The turn-on signal taken by wrapping a bare wire around a fuse and jamming it back into the fuse box. Nothing loomed. Nothing fused correctly at the battery.
Then it cuts out. Then it stops working. Then, sometimes, it burns.
When that car comes to us, there is usually nothing to fix. It gets gutted and built again from scratch, and the customer pays a second time — more than our price would have been the first time.
We have watched this happen for over twenty years. It is the single most common story that walks through our door.
Same standard on every vehicle, whether it is a brand-new Range Rover or a 1989 Honda Civic.
A powered subwoofer — amplifier built into the box — is where most shops cut corners. It looks like a plug-in job, so it gets treated like one.
It is not. A powered sub still needs power sized and fused at the battery, still needs a proper firewall pass, still needs a short clean ground, still needs the signal taken correctly, still needs to be mounted so it does not move.
At AMS a powered or pre-wired subwoofer gets the exact same installation as a full amplifier build. Nothing is skipped because the amplifier happens to be inside the box.
Monoblock — one channel driving your subwoofer. This is the bass build, and it is the job we do more than any other.
Four-channel — one amplifier running your full set of speakers. This is the most labor-intensive job in car audio. Four to six hours on most vehicles, and European cars can run overnight. Power and signal get routed down opposite sides of the car so you never hear alternator whine or engine noise, and polarity gets verified on every single channel. A single reversed pair ruins a system and most people cannot tell you why it sounds wrong.
Five-channel — speakers and subwoofer on one chassis. A complete system on one amplifier, one power run, one ground. Same work as a four-channel with the bass stage on top, and the whole thing tuned together rather than set separately.
